Behind the Scenes

Our History

SW Sting FC is the premier soccer program of the South West Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (SWEMSA). We believe in a balanced lifestyle where a sensible approach to training and learning in sport is matched with the individual and team goals.

SW Sting was formed in the late 1990's and was initially catered to operating competitive club teams at the Tier 2, 3 and Tier 4 level for our designated Southwest Edmonton Zone. In the early years with Sting, many young athletes who trained under Jorge Rodriguez have moved on to international success and professional careers, most notable Asmir Begovic and Tos Ricketts.

In 2012 SW Sting began working towards including Tier 1 calibre of play into it's programming and recruited highly qualified technical directors, Jorge Rodriguez and Sinisa Matic to create a long term athlete development environment (in accordance with CSA guidelines) where players were placed at the proper age level and tier. Sting mandate has always been to 'develop the player and the person' regardless of results on the field and we are very proud to see many of our former players returning as coaches and continuing to play this beautiful game as adults.

SW Sting is well known to deliver technical training to each team, player, and keeper as delivered by our Technical Staff. We are also very proud to have enthusiastic and technically sound female trainers that cater to our girls teams.

Our passionate volunteer coaches are NCCP trained and/or certified, and are provided coaching opportunities annually to deliver age-appropriate practices, training ethics, tactical play and team development within a supportive atmosphere.

We are proud of our family of volunteers and team officials who are committed to ensure every players has a positive soccer experience. The club now re-branded has seen tremendous growth over the last several years, and as a result of these efforts, we are one of the largest competitive youth soccer club in EMSA.

A partnership with our community league program EMSA South West, ensures we have a home for every child even if they do not end up on one of our SW Sting FC Tier 1, 2, or 3 teams. We have many excellent opportunities for young athletes in our zone's Tier 4 and lower programs (over 400 teams and 6,000 players) which are sponsored by one of our local community leagues who have excellent qualified coaches and volunteer support.

Our Committee
